Don't miss this exclusive opportunity to experience Bethlehem's famous The Rocks in a whole new way! Celebrated in newspaper articles from the New York Times to Yankee Magazine, which named it "Editor's Choice Best of New England," The Rocks is a jewel of Northern New England. Through a collaboration between Bretton Woods Vacations and the non-profit Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (Forest Society), we are now offering the historic Gardener's Cottage at The Rocks for those seeking a completely unique experience! The 1,400 acre reserve evokes the pastoral beauty of the turn of the turn of the 20th Century Gilded Age in New Hampshire, with beautiful trails, stone walls, carefully renovated historic buildings and a working Christmas Tree farm.
The Rocks was for many years the summer home of Chicago businessman and International Harvester cofounder John Jacob Glessner and his family, who chose this site for its amazing views of the White Mountains. The property was protected in 1978 when the Glessner Family donated it to the Forest Society. Many charming features of the farm’s Gilded Age history endure, including farm buildings designed by Chicago architects, an Olmsted-designed formal garden that the Gardener’s Cottage once served (the same firm that designed Central Park and the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, among others!).
Today, The Rocks is home to the Forest Society’s North Country Conservation and Education Center and is an active public site with a range of ongoing activities. Here, visitors (including you) can participate in a variety of events year-round, from cutting a Christmas Tree (in season) to the extremely popular NH Maple Experience, an experiential educational program that includes maple tapping, syrup sampling, and an interactive museum, as well as organized hikes/snowshoe trips, lectures and guest speaker series.

Self guided walking tours of the 5+ miles of trails are always available, as there are markers and plaques showing the key sites on the stunning property, but you can also hire a guide for a 2.5 hour guided tour that will touch on the history and ecology of this unique place. The Rocks is home to many species of native animals, from bear and moose to wild turkey and countless bird species. Many of these animals, their habits, and their habitats are featured in the Forest Society's Natural History Programs, offered at The Rocks and other venues throughout the year.
Due to the sensitive habitats surrounding the property, you are welcome to bring your dog, but please make sure s/he is on a leash at all times!
During the day, this peaceful heaven of natural and historical beaty welcomes visitors from all over the world - but don't worry, with over 1,400 acres of land, you will never feel crowded. In the afternoon, when the daytime visitors leave, you will have the place all to yourself. With walking trails crisscrossing the hills surrounding the cottage, and stunning views of Mount Washington and the northern White Mountains range, you can soak in the serenity that this historical site exudes like few others get to. For more information on events and the property, please also visit the Forest Society website.
Inside, the 1890s home was just renovated to maintain its historical character but pair it with 21st century comforts. The kitchen features new appliances and is fully equipped for home cooking, and opens up to a dining table that comfortably seats 8. The adjacent living room has a sectional couch and Roku TV (if you can take your eyes off the gorgeous mountain views), and a second living space doubles as additional bedroom with a pull-out couch that sleeps 2. On the same level you will find a completely renovated bathroom and a large laundry room.
Head upstairs to find 3 additional bedrooms and a small but functional half bath; 2 of them feature king beds, and one has a queen bed, with gorgeous antique flooring that has been freshly restored. Enjoy the stunning views from this level, as well!
Of course, while you will WANT to spend some time exploring the property and taking advantage of all the experiences it offers, don't forget to get out and explore. With Bretton Woods and Cannon only 20 minutes or so away, you'll have a myriad of sports options. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the many golf courses nearby, from the award winning greens of Bretton Woods to the nearby historical Maplewood Golf Club. But there is so much more to do! From fishing to sightseeing, from shopping to world class hiking to the incredible Lost River Gorge to Santa's Village and Storyland and Clark's Trading Post - and of course, the world famous Cog Railway - you will have days and days worth of activities within a short distance. And with reliable wifi and rates that get cheaper the longer you stay, you may just want to make this a longer vacation! Plus, enjoy the convenience of keyless entry, completely virtual and simple check-in/check-out, and linens, towels, and basic amenities such as paper toilet paper, paper towels, soaps and shampoos are always provided.
