Sunapee Opponents Turn Out in Force at Public Hearing

by Dan Seufert, Union Leader

NEWBURY — About 150 residents of area towns crowded the Sunapee Lodge at the base of the Mount Sunapee Resort Tuesday night, most arguing against a proposed expansion of the state-owned ski area.

A large number of speakers said the success of the resort has not improved the local economy. Gary Stansfield of Goshen said any new jobs from the expansion would be "part-time, seasonal jobs selling hot chocolate to tourists."

Some, like Sue Russell of Newbury, said the state's draft decision allowing the conditional expansion of the resort amounted to serving "a corporate renter" instead of "the common good."

"Stop this use of our state park for corporate profit," said Lisa Bozogan of Wilmot.

Some of the more than 75 registered speakers at a public hearing on the state's decision to allow a conditional expansion of the ski area supported the resort's leasers, Tim and Diane Mueller.
