The nonprofit Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests seeks two experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individuals for a 12-week, summer forestry/stewardship technician position. The position includes boundary line maintenance, post-harvest surveys and assistance with timber stand improvement projects. This is a full time, temporary, position based out of the Conservation Center, in Concord, NH. This position will involve travel to the Forest Society's reservations located around the state.

Reports to: Field Foresters Salary: $14.50/hour
Nonexempt / Full time / Temporary
Position Summary:
The field forestry technicians will perform boundary line maintenance, and assist in other stewardship activities on our reservations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work alone, with forester or other intern to perform boundary line maintenance (60 miles)
- Engage in everyday stewardship activities, which could include trail work, recreation management, property maintenance, or other needs identified by Forest Society Reservation Stewardship staff
- Assist staff with running volunteer workdays and trainings such as Monadnock Trails Week
- Perform post-harvest surveys to measure regeneration, snags and downed woody debris
- Assist with timber stand improvement projects
- Work on other forestry, recreation, and stewardship projects as directed.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- Ability to work long hours in rough conditions including heat, rain, and rugged terrain
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and be proficient with hand tools (axe training a plus)
- Ability to work alone and navigate with map and compass and GPS in sometimes remote locations
- Ability to use a chainsaw and other power tools/equipment (brush saw, cordless drill) is helpful but not required
- Experience in natural resources field data collection and familiarity with forestry field tools (clinometer, Biltmore stick, d-tape, basal area angle gauges)
- Ability to identify common tree species
- Ability to use ESRI ArcGIS 10 software (helpful), Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, vehicular insurance, and ability to travel throughout New Hampshire
- Outdoor skills and savvy
- Ability to do an occasional overnight or weekend
- Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
Must be able to hike and carry equipment for long distances, outdoors in rough conditions including heat, rain, and rugged terrain.
Physical Requirements:
Fieldwork on Forest Society Reservations may be physically demanding, and is accomplished in a variety of weather conditions. Reservations are located throughout the State of New Hampshire in sometimes difficult and remote terrain. Forestry Stewardship Interns will carry their daily supplies and lunches with them and may be working alone and long distances from roads.
