Forest Society Hosts Timber Harvest Tour at the Tom Rush Forest in Deering

Join staff from the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and Bronnenberg Logging and Trucking for a timber harvest tour on the organization’s Tom Rush Forest on Saturday, January 15 from 10 am to 1 pm. Participants should be prepared for moderate hiking. The Forest Society acquired the 300-acre forest reservation from folk singer Tom Rush in 2002.

Visitors will learn about logging practices, wood markets, and the diverse mix of products generated by a careful timber harvest. This fall and winter, the Bronnenbergs worked to remove low-grade and ice storm-damaged hardwood trees and to thin the overstocked forest stands. This operation involved heavy equipment, including a grapple skidder, feller-buncher, chipper, and processer.

The care and responsible management of forest reservations like the Tom Rush Forest contributes to the local, statewide, and regional forest products economy, providing good jobs and economic revenue ripple effects across the entire region. The forest products industry in New Hampshire provides $2.3 billion in annual revenues and employs nearly 10,000 workers in logging, trucking, sawmills, and pulp and paper industries.

Pre-registration for this timber harvest tour is required. For more information or to register, visit http://www.forestsociety.org/thingstodo or call 603-224-9945.

Founded in 1901, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is the state’s oldest and largest non-profit land conservation organization.
