Position Summary: This 10-week paid internship in Summer 2017 will support the introduction of the Forest Society’s new Forest Explorer trails app to hikers at Mount Major in Alton. The intern will have an opportunity to develop and complete his/her own market research project regarding the Forest Explorer app’s use and ability to engage hikers. Support will be provided from the Forest Explorer staff team in developing and implementing this project. Other educational opportunities include developing additional content for Forest Explorer, assisting with outreach events, and opportunities to interact with and shadow professionals in different departments of the Forest Society.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with Forest Explorer staff team to develop a plan for launch and assessment of the NH Forest Explorer trails app at Mount Major, including establishment of assessment goals, what data to collect, and how to collect and analyze it.
Implement launch and assessment of Forest Explorer app in the field/trailhead at Mount Major, collecting data from visitors over the busy summer season.
Offer one or more guided Forest Explorer group hikes up Mount Major.
Analyze collected data and organize into a summary report to be presented to Forest Society staff.
Assist Forest Explorer team in developing additional content for the Forest Explorer app on other Forest Reservations.
Assist Director of Education Dave Anderson with school/camp group hikes on Mount Major (Mount Major Outdoor Classroom).
Assist with guided hikes, events, and trailwork/stewardship workdays on conservation properties around the state as interest and availability allow.
Contributions/Outcomes: The intern in this position will develop, implement, and complete a market research project evaluating the launch of NH Forest Explorer trails app on Mount Major, and assessing its success in engaging hikers. A final report/presentation will be delivered to Forest Society staff at the end of the internship. This effort will contribute greatly to our continued development and improvement of the NH Forest Explorer app as we produce additional content and launch the app at other Forest Reservations. In addition to being in charge of a significant project, the intern will be exposed to and learn about many other aspects of working at a non-profit land conservation organization through job shadowing and attendance at staff meetings and events.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
Comfortable approaching and interacting positively with hikers at Mount Major
Friendly, positive demeanor
Creativity, and the ability to approach a problem from different angles
Knowledgeable about and comfortable with mobile technology
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently, develop and complete a largely self-directed project
Significant outdoor/hiking experience a plus
Working Conditions: This position will involve some office work at the Forest Society’s Conservation Center in Concord, but the majority of hours will be spent outside at Mount Major (Alton, NH). Significant weekend work will be required to access largest numbers of hikers. Field work will often be done independently. Occasional travel to other Forest Reservations may also be required.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work outside, independently, in a variety of weather and environmental conditions (heat, wind, rain, biting insects)
Physically able to climb Mount Major with a daypack
Must have own reliable transportation and valid driver’s license
