The individual selected for this position will work independently on website and media projects, as well as assisting staff with planning, advertising, implementing and documenting outreach and volunteer events and other engagement initiatives. This is a great opportunity to gain authentic experience working in communications at an environmental non-profit organization.
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests was founded in 1901 and is among the oldest and largest non-profit land trusts in the US. The Forest Society is dedicated to protecting the state's most important landscapes while promoting the wise use of its renewable natural resources. We are a recognized leader in land protection, forest management, education, public recreation, and conservation advocacy. We own over 185 Forest Reservations distributed across the state covering over 57, 000 combined acres.

Job Title: Summer Outreach and Communications Intern
Department: Communications
Reports to: Anna Berry, Digital Outreach Manager
Rate of Pay: $13/hour
Nonexempt—Part time—Temporary
Position Summary:
The Forest Society is seeking a part time (20-30 hrs/wk) summer intern to work in with its Communications and Outreach Team. The individual selected for this position will work independently on website and media projects, as well as assisting staff with planning, advertising, implementing and documenting outreach and volunteer events and other engagement initiatives. This is a great opportunity to gain authentic experience working in communications at an environmental non-profit organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with improving the Forest Society’s online Forest Reservations Guide, which provides information about recreation on fee-owned lands. Post content to website and edit existing content, with the goal of making the Reservations Guide more accurate, robust, and user-friendly.
- Attend Forest Society events, field trips, workshops and volunteer workdays to document these events with photo and video. Edit and develop this media content to highlight these events on our website, e-newsletter, and various social media outlets.
- Write stories/blog posts about events, workdays, or intern experiences that can be shared on our website and e-newsletters.
- Assist with beta-testing our mobile interpretive map platform, Forest Explorer, at various field locations throughout the state, and especially at Mount Major Reservation in Alton, NH.
- Assist with preparation, advertising, and implementation of community and volunteer engagement events, including land campaign events, Merrimack River Documentary film festivals and premiers, Monadnock Trails Week, field trips, volunteer trainings and workdays, youth environmental education events, annual meeting, etc.
- Improve website content and functionality within our content-editable website. Edit and improve keyword tagging, cross post content from other media sources (radio, magazine, newspaper) to our website, and make edits to page content to improve appearance and accuracy of information.
- Enter visitor outreach data from Grafton Pond and Mount Major into ongoing databases used for analysis of visitor trends.
- Enter volunteer contact information and hours into volunteer database.
- Set up and manage a temporary online “store” for staff and volunteers to purchase Forest Society logo wear and items for use at outreach events.
Contributions/Outcomes:
The goal of this position is to provide an intern with an authentic experience working in communications at an environmental non-profit company. The intern will assist Communications Department staff with various on-going projects, and will work independently on projects related to improving content on the Forest Society’s website. Skills gained will include working on a content editable website, development of written and image media, video production and computer editing, experience with databases (Salesforce and Excel), and planning, advertising and implementing outreach and volunteer events.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- Have completed at least two years of a university/college degree program.
- Strong interest in communications, marketing and outreach, as well as in conservation and forestry. Educational background in either sector is a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills; ability to deliver programs to a public audience.
- Ability to work independently on self-directed projects.
- Familiar and comfortable with technology, including windows/Microsoft Office suite, website/blog editing, mobile technologies and applications, and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc). Experience with video editing preferred.
- Creative thinker with a sense of humor
- Physically able to hike in forested landscapes over varied terrain and in challenging environmental conditions (weather, bugs)
- Possess a working smartphone (Andriod or iOS) for beta-testing Forest Explorer.
- Access to reliable vehicle for transportation, and valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions:
Intern will be working primarily in an indoor office setting, but will also be required to work outside in various weather and environmental conditions (heat, humidity, direct sunlight, biting insects).
