The Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests invites you to take a guided hike up Mt. Major on Monday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
We'll visit some of the hidden features located just off the main trails. Learn about the current effort to purchase and conserve 950 acres on and near the popular peak and the network of more than 70 miles of hiking trails in the 50-square-mile Belknap Mountain Range.
The hike will include information on cultural history of land use in the Belknap range and the forest ecology and wildlife habitats of the region. Good summit views will allow hike leaders Dave Anderson and Tom Howe to point out prominent islands, peaks and local points of interest.
We'll cover a total of 3.4 miles with moderately strenuous hiking. Wear good hiking boots and dress appropriately for the weather with raingear, sunscreen and insect repellant suggested. Bring plenty of water; byo lunch for a summit picnic.
The hike will begin at the main parking lot for the Mt. Major trailhead on NH Rte. 11 just 6.4 miles north of the tip of Alton Bay in Alton, N.H.
