Moose Ecology Talk

Forest Society North at The Rocks is excited to invite participants to learn about moose ecology and the current threats to the population to help attendees understand why there are fewer moose in New Hampshire now than 20 years ago.

The talk and Q&A will be led by Henry Jones, Moose Project Leader with NH Fish and Game. In his role Jones coordinates moose management in New Hampshire, which includes monitoring the size and health of the moose population, promoting conservation of moose habitat, managing moose-related recreation, and providing information to the public.

Guided Hike at Creek Farm

Summer-like weather often lingers into September along the Seacoast, making the Forest Society’s 35-acre Creek Farm in Portsmouth an ideal spot for a late-summer hike along Sagamore Creek. Explore the history of the stately Carey Cottage and gardens, established by Arthur Astor Carey and his wife, Agnes. The easy 1.5-mile Little Harbor Loop Trail connects to the Wentworth-Coolidge State Historic Site and offers views of Little Harbor from land adjacent to The Little Harbor Chapel.

The Forest Society’s Annual DIY “5 Hikes Challenge” runs from August 30 to October 31. Complete the hikes on your own schedule, or join one of our optional, staff-led outings to explore new or classic destinations during the challenge. These guided hikes are open to everyone—not just challenge participants—and offer a great way to visit and learn more about our properties.

This moderately challenging trail offers about 400 feet of elevation gain and includes a short, low-traffic road walk along Lewis Hill Road (with even more views) to complete the loop. It’s a perfect tune-up for the autumn hiking season.

Guided Hike at Monson Center

Step back in time to Monson, the earliest inland Colonial-era settlement in New Hampshire (1737–1770). Tour the Joseph Gould House, explore easy trails to the stone cellar holes of original settlers, and visit a unique wetland home to a Great Blue Heron rookery. The Forest Society purchased Monson in 1998 to protect its historic resources after the site was once proposed for residential subdivision.
