I was walking on the Winant Park trail in Concord recently, getting a quick walk in before it rained on a cloudy afternoon. A section of the trail goes through a hemlock grove, a beautiful, cool, dark place. As I walked into the grove it looked as I expected, all dark browns and greens – except for a spot of bright orange and yellow on the far side of grove. As I got closer I found a gorgeous fungus growing on a fallen tree. A bright sunny spot of color in the darkness!
According to a local expert, it’s Laetiporus sulphureus, also known as Sulphur Shelf. Sulphur Shelf has another name: Chicken of the Woods. It can be edible, but only if it's growing on certain kinds of trees.
