Forest Society Trustees Approve Balsams Easement Amendment

Required Mitigation to Protect Old Growth Forest

Jack Savage | December 3, 2015

“On Dec 2,  the Board of Trustees of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests approved a request by Balsams View, LLC and Dixville Capital, LLC, for an amendment to the conservation restrictions on land at the Balsams to allow the construction of two ski lifts and certain trails. The amendment requires specific mitigation that significantly enhances the protection of old growth forest and high elevation habitat.

“The amendment and mitigation must still be approved by the Charitable Trusts Unit of the Office of the New Hampshire Attorney General, as outlined in the Forest Society’s Conservation Easement Amendment Policy based on guidelines provided by the Attorney General.

“In 2012 the Forest Society acquired conservation restrictions on 5,690 acres of undeveloped land surrounding the Balsams hotel. Those restrictions envisioned a revitalized Balsams Resort while setting out provisions to protect the conservation values of the property.”
