Public Invited to Celebrate Opening of New Forest Reservation

Join the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests on Saturday, August 28 to celebrate the completion of the campaign to conserve the Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest. The event will take place from 10:30 am to 1 pm in Lempster and will kick off with refreshments, remarks, and reflections followed by a guided hike to the summit of Silver Mountain to enjoy the magnificent views that are now protected in perpetuity.

Silver Mountain’s bald summit is a popular hiking and blueberry-picking destination that offers spectacular views to the south and west. Forest Society staff will describe the area’s wildlife habitat and forest ecology, and visitors will learn how this land provides critical habitat for bears, bobcats, moose, fox, coyote, mink, and other creatures.

The Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest also includes two miles of shoreline around Long Pond and Sand Pond and more than 11,000 feet of frontage along the Ashuelot River, which supplies drinking water to the residents of Keene and others.

With the help of more than 650 individual donors, the Forest Society was able to raise the $2.2 million needed to conserve the 1,750 acres that encompass the mountain, the river, and the ponds.
