Explore Plein Air Painting with Portsmouth Artist Doris Rice on
the Forest Society’s Creek Farm Reservation
Learn how to paint en plein air with artist Doris Rice on Saturday, May 22 at the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests’ picturesque Creek Farm reservation in Portsmouth. From 9:30 am to noon, participants will receive a lesson in the basics of watercolor painting followed by a critique at the end. You’ll find inspiration in Sagamore Creek, Goose Island, Portsmouth Harbor, and Creek Farm Cottage. Light refreshments will be served.
Doris Rice is a watercolor painter from New Hampshire. She received her formal art training at the Moore College of Art, Philadelphia. She prefers to paint en plein air, finding her artistic inspiration from the great outdoors.
“I want to capture the immediacy of a place in time,” said Rice. “Sensory feelings of light, movement, sound and fresh air combine for a painting, which is alive with energy.”
Workshop participants are asked to bring paint brushes (1” flat and #10 round), a palette with watercolor paints, watercolor paper (140 pound cold press paper), and a backer board. (A loaner Kit is available for the day for $5.)
Participants will also need to bring a shallow dish or container for storing water, a bottle of seltzer or drinking water for pouring, and clips to hold their paper to the backer board. Optional items to bring include sunblock, bug spray, and easel and chair if desired.
The total cost for the lesson is $20 (plus $5 for paint supplies if needed).
