The board of selectmen officially voiced its opposition to the proposed natural gas pipeline this week, maintaining the existing route would disturb the town’s rural character and quality of life.
In an eight-page letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, all five selectmen said they have strong reservations about the recommended path of the pipeline.
“The proposed route through Amherst is poorly chosen with numerous adverse effects on our community, and must be changed if this pipeline is to pass through the town,” states the letter.
Not only would the pipeline impact the character of the town and diminish the quality of life in some neighborhoods, selectmen claim it will undermine the town’s master plan, and unnecessarily risk the town’s most precious surface waterway — the Souhegan River.
