Forest Society President Jack Savage shared a statement following Governor Sununu’s veto of House Bill 142, which proposed to forgive the Burgess Biopower plant’s obligation to repay the costs it owes to Eversource.

“As part of the overall plan for the long-term stewardship of our state’s forests, the Forest Society has long emphasized the importance of having markets for the low-grade wood landowners harvest in our state," Savage said. "Certainly, the Burgess plant has served as the anchor for this market and if facility were to permanently close it would be a blow to forestland owners, foresters and loggers as well as Berlin.

"It is too early for us to comment on what the future will be for low-grade wood markets but we will continue to work with our partners in the forestry community to assess our next steps.”
