On Wednesday, March 22, the New Hampshire House of Representatives will vote on House Bill 56, legislation that would establish a formula for determining the distance for which a new landfill shall be located from a perennial river, lake, or coastal water.  This distance would be based on the time that groundwater takes to reach those water bodies. The minimum distance would be how far a potential leak would travel in five years.

The Forest Society supported HB 56. Read our testimony here.

The Committee on Environment and Agriculture split by a vote of 10-10 on whether to approve passage of the bill.  This tie vote shows the vote in the full House will also be very close.

  • We would encourage readers to contact their elected representative in the House to urge them to vote in support of the bill. To find your representative and their contact information, click on this link.
