When Mother Nature dons her winter whites, the season's conifers sparkle like emeralds. To see them in all their crystalline beauty, pay a visit to one of the country's snow-dappled Christmas-tree farms, where you can choose and cut down a winner to whisk home. Beyond their vast selections of spruces and firs, these farms deliver a bounty of Christmas magic in the form of wagon rides, seasonal treats and ciders, and even warming bonfires. To stoke your holiday spirit, set your sights on one of these spots, and head into the woods.

The Rocks in Bethlehem, New Hampshire

If a scene from a snow globe spanned 1,400 acres, it would look like The Rocks, in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. Framed by the White Mountains to the east, this Christmas tree farm belongs to a local land trust, and each purchase aids conservation efforts. This year, due to the pandemic, you'll need to make an advance reservation for your visit, which can take place any day through December 20, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; the reservation cost of $40 will be applied toward the price of your tree. Upon arrival, you'll have an hour and a half to pick out your prized balsam from the snow-covered rows (trees up to eight feet sell for $55).
