Position Announcement: Conservation Center Floodplain Ranger
The non-profit Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests seeks a candidate to fill a Conservation Center Floodplain Ranger position. The candidate performs stewardship and monitoring of recreational use on the 103 acre Merrimack River Outdoor Education and Conservation Area (MROECA) working to inform the public of the intended uses of the property. The successful candidate will have a background in Parks and Recreation, Law Enforcement, Environmental Education, Natural Resources, Geography, or other related field.
This is a part-time temporary position based at the Conservation Center in Concord, NH. The Conservation Center Floodplain Ranger will be required approximately 20 hours per week May through September and the candidate must be available days, evenings and weekends in variable weather conditions.
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is a statewide land conservation organization that was founded in 1901 to protect New Hampshire’s most important landscapes and promote wise use of its renewable natural resources. Today, with 9,400 member households and over 40 employees, the Forest Society owns 172 reservations in 102 communities across the state, and has interests and monitoring responsibilities for 818 conservation easements. Reports to: Facilities Manager
Nonexempt, Part-time, Temporary
Hourly rate: $12 per hour
Position Summary:
The non-profit Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests seeks candidates to fill two Conservation Center Floodplain Ranger positions. Our Floodplain Rangers assist the Facilities Manager by performing stewardship and monitoring of recreational use on the 103 acre Merrimack River Outdoor Education and Conservation Area (MROECA). They also work to educate and inform the public about the property and the intended uses of the property. The successful candidate will have a background in Parks and Recreation, Law Enforcement, Environmental Education, Natural Resources, Geography, or other related field.
This is a part-time temporary position based at the Conservation Center in Concord, NH from May through September. The Floodplain Rangers coordinate their schedules to provide continuous coverage during afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Random monitoring of floodplain trail system and parking areas in variable weather conditions.
Forest Society Policy enforcement, including but not limited to:
“Leave No Trace” Ethics Enforcement
“No Wheeled Vehicles” Policy Enforcement
“No Smoking” Policy Enforcement
“Pet Waste Disposal” Policy Enforcement
Assist with outreach and education, including guided tours and surveys
Create and update content on social media
Coordinate monitoring efforts with volunteer Floodplain Monitor program participants
Perform trail maintenance and minor repairs to trail infrastructure
Other duties as assigned
Contributions/Outcomes:
This position educates the public as to proper use of the Merrimack River Outdoor Education and Conservation Area, assists in maintaining the property in good condition and monitoring for appropriate uses. Over the course of the season the Floodplain Ranger should become increasingly able to handle typical situations, relieving the Facilities Manager of much of the burden of routine recreational use.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
Background in Parks and Recreation, Law Enforcement, Environmental Education, Natural Resources, Geography, or other related field
Highly motivated individual with an outgoing personality, strong public communication skills, and outdoor skills.
Exhibits good judgment, self-confidence, cool headedness and common sense
Must demonstrate competency using and maintaining hand tools and power tools
Basic carpentry skills are a plus
Valid Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and a working cell phone
Working Conditions:
Candidate will spend most days working and walking outside on the MROECA
20 hours per week; days, evenings, and weekends May - September
This position requires work in variable weather conditions
Physical Requirements:
Ability to move over uneven ground for multiple hours during shifts
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
Ability to use hand tools to perform physically demanding tasks
Ability to use power tools and equipment (helpful but not required)
