Position Announcement: Summer Forestry/Stewardship Technician - Forest Society, Concord, NH

The nonprofit Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (Forest Society) seeks two experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individuals for a temporary, 12-week summer stewardship technician position.

This is a full-time, temporary, 12-week position based out of the Forest Society Conservation Center, in Concord, NH. This position will involve travel to the Forest Society's reservations located around the state.

Founded in 1901, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is one of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most successful state-based land conservation and forestry organizations. A full-time staff of 40 administers programs in land protection, conservation education, environmental advocacy, and sustainable forest resource management.  Reservation Stewardship staff currently oversees the management of 185 properties totaling over 56,000 acres, located in 105 NH communities. If you enjoy working both independently and in a cooperative team-approach in a challenging, at times fast-paced, but always rewarding, setting you may be the right person for this position.  A copy of the full job description is available at www.forestsociety.org.

Full Job Description:

Department: Reservation Stewardship

Reports to: Field Foresters                     

Salary Range:  $13.50/hour Nonexempt/Full Time/Seasonal

Position Summary:  The field forestry technicians will perform boundary line maintenance, and assist in other stewardship activities on our reservations. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work alone, with forester or other intern to perform boundary line maintenance (60 miles)
Engage in everyday stewardship activities, which could include trail work, recreation management, property maintenance, or other needs identified by Forest Society Reservation Stewardship staff
Assist staff with running volunteer workdays and trainings such as Monadnock Trails Week
Perform post-harvest surveys to measure regeneration, snags and down woody debris
Assist with timber stand improvement projects
Work on other forestry, recreation, and stewardship projects as directed.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

Ability to work long hours in rough conditions including heat, rain, and rugged terrain
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and be proficient with hand tools
Ability to work alone and navigate with map and compass and GPS in sometimes remote locations
Ability to use a chainsaw and other power tools and equipment (helpful but not required)
Experience in natural resources field data collection and familiarity with forestry field tools (clinometer, Biltmore stick, d-tape, basal area angle gauges)
Ability to identify common tree species
Ability to use ESRI ArcGIS 10 software (helpful), Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word
Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, vehicular insurance, and ability to travel throughout New Hampshire
Outdoor skills and savvy
Ability to do an occasional overnight or weekend

Working Conditions:

Must be able to hike and carry equipment for long distances, outdoors in rough conditions including heat, rain, and rugged terrain. 

Physical Requirements:

Field work on Forest Society Reservations may be physically demanding and is accomplished in a variety of weather conditions.  Reservations are located throughout the State of New Hampshire in sometimes difficult and remote terrain.  Forestry Stewardship Interns will carry their daily supplies and lunches with them and may be working alone and long distances from roads.
