The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic professional to fill the role of Human Resource Director, reporting directly to the President. The successful candidates primary role will be to further the organizations culture and collaborative environment. This individual will have exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Human Resource Director
Reports to: President
Salary range: $42,000 - $52,500 (reflects 60% time)
This position is Exempt, Part-Time, Regular
Position Summary:
Responsible for all aspects of Human Resources including adherence to state law, federal law and HR best practices while working to advance the organizational culture. Handle risk and asset management. Oversee the Forest Society's Human Resources function in a professional and ethical manner. Council managers on all employee related issues, and serve as the primary contact for all staff on benefits. Maintain all personnel files, and provide guidance to staff as necessary on all human resource related matters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Departmentally
- Oversee Human Resources functions including: Develop in-house tools for all aspects of HR, provide advice and mentoring to supervisors on HR practices and legal issues; Consult with and advise staff on employment issues and concerns; remain educated on current NH and US employment law and HR best practices; serve as member of the Safety Committee to help identify and recommend mitigation for employee safety risks
- Develop, document and improve internal processes and procedures for HR, ensure staff compliance
- Manage relationships with outside service providers of employee benefit including: evaluate, negotiate, and renew health, dental, workers compensation, EAP & flexible spending account (FSA)
- Responsible for keeping staff information in payroll system updated; Authorize payment of all benefit-related bills; Process all new hires and provide information about benefits; Assist employees with questions about benefits
- Responsible for filing required reports and maintaining records in accordance with law and best practices including: Prepare and submit Unemployment filings, Workers Comp. filings. Track staff sick and vacation time accruals; manage all HR records including document retention/destruction; manage updates to employee handbook; Compile wage and benefits surveys. Create and maintain all HR forms and update and maintain temporary and seasonal staff excel time sheet templates.
- Manage 403b compliance by chairing internal fiduciary committee for annual plan review
Organizationally
- Advance organizational culture; implement strategies creating an equitable, collaborative and inclusive workplace in line with the organization’s goals
- Manage improvements to on-boarding and off-boarding processes
- Involvement in staff hiring; applicant resume review, sits on hiring committee providing guidance
- Manage annual staff review process; ensure supervisor compliance, maintain up to date job descriptions
- Work with Board of Trustees to administer the President’s annual review
- Work with Facilities Manager on staff needs related to office equipment needs and comfort
- Assist with the coordination of organizational re-accreditation
- Assume additional tasks/responsibilities as needed
Contributions/Outcomes:
The Human Resource Director is responsible for the sound human resource management of the Forest Society. Works with President and senior staff to advance organizational goals through sound HR management. The accuracy, timeliness, attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality of this work are vital to the efficient functioning and the reputation of the Forest Society, both inside and outside the organization. The Human Resource Director will establish and foster organizational values across all staff.
Qualifications and Skills required:
- Minimum of 10 years of human resource experience
- The highest standard of confidentiality and discretion regarding sensitive HR information
- Advanced experience with the Microsoft Office suite of products
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively inside and outside the organization even in difficult circumstances
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to anticipate and meet deadlines consistently
- Exhibit a high degree of self-motivation
- Self-starter - requires the ability to pro-actively find answers to problems
- Good judgment, a can-do attitude, creativity and a sense of humor appreciated
- Interest in land protection or conservation helpful
Working Conditions:
Solar office building with open floor plan. Occasional travel to other Forest Society offices and forest reservations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit and type at a computer for long periods. Ability and willingness to stroll through the woods, sometimes on an incline and decline, over varying terrain.
