Timber Harvest Tour at Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest- FULL

Join Forest Society staff, UNH Extension, and consulting foresters for a hiking tour of an active timber harvest on Silver Mountain at the Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest. Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest is a 1800-acre property that includes the summit of Silver Mtn, which overlooks Sand and Long Ponds.  Attendees will learn more about the history of the property, the planning that goes into a timber harvest, why certain trees are selected to cut, and how the forest will respond in the future. Additional discussions will include timber markets, picking the right machinery for the job, and considerations for recreational trails, hydrology, and wildlife habitat.

This field trip is oriented toward adults.

BRING: Attendees should be prepared for winter conditions and snowy or icy terrain. Bring a snack or water and be prepared to carry it with you.  Bring layers, winter clothes, good winter boots and traction is recommended. Plan to be outside and away from your vehicle for the full tour.

DOG POLICY: Sorry, we do not allow dogs on our field trips.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: Attendees will be walking over hilly terrain, along skid trails and through the woods for about 1 mile of total distance.
