Cannon Mountain Ski Area
With support from the Forest Society, the State Park System Advisory Council suggested that Franconia Notch State Park would benefit from a master plan that addresses not only the leasing issue, but also the many other public use issues the park is challenged with. This master plan would be crafted by DRED and informed by a series of public hearings, where all stakeholders would have an opportunity to weigh in on the future of Franconia Notch State Park. New Hampshire state legislators passed a state budget this week that funds Cannon Mountain Ski Area through 2013, and in so doing removed a Senate proposal to lease the state-owned resort in Franconia Notch to a private operator.
While lawmakers in Concord work on the final details of the state budget, a group is lobbying hard against a plan to lease Cannon Mountain to a private operator.
If leasing Cannon amply benefits the state and protects the mountain, the governor should be willing to bend. And likewise the Legislature, if leasing would put this precious resource at too great a risk with little benefit.
